About KRTU
the history,
facts, and legends
|
Founded in 1976, KRTU hit the San Antonio airwaves with an
awe-inspiring 10 watts of power, giving it an effective range of
almost reaching adjoining buildings. Rapid growth and
several transmitter upgrades, the most recent of which taking
place in 2002, brought KRTU to progressively more and more of
the San Antonio community. Now, with 8900 watts behind the
transmitter and tower, located on top of the Ruth Taylor Theatre
on the Trinity University campus, KRTU's effective range spans
all of San Antonio and even into some of the adjoining
townships, such as Boerne, Greune, Leon Springs, and many more.
The growth of KRTU's student, community, and staff involvement has
also increased over the years, from a purely-volunteer lab to
what is today a highly-active professional institution with a
devoted staff of 6, 20+ community volunteers, and almost 40
students working as interns, managers, or on-air hosts.
KRTU is still operated out of the Trinity Department of
Communication, with the Chair, Dr. William Christ, serving as
General Manager, and the rest of the Communication faculty
involved as the station's Board of Trustees.
The mission of KRTU 91.7 is to support and enhance the academic
curriculum, especially that offered by the Department of
Communication, and to advance Trinity University's leadership in
the fine arts and in the dissemination of knowledge for the
enrichment of the lives of its students and the greater San
Antonio community. KRTU seeks to achieve this mission
through quality radio programming, informed commentary,
community-events notifications, and sponsorship of prestigious
local events.
